About Gunzo’s Hockey Store

Wally “Gunzo” Humeniuk

Wally “Gunzo” Humeniuk spent 1948 to 1955 with the Detroit Red Wings. He was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1955. From 1955 to 1961, Gunzo was the Chicago Blackhawks backup goal tender and assistant trainer. In 1961, the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup. Walter “Gunzo” Humeniuk’s name appears on the Stanley Cup. In 1963, Wally Gunzo founded Gunzo’s Sports Center, Inc. in Berwyn, Illinois. After a fire destroyed the hockey store, Gunzo opened a bigger, better location at 7706 West Madison St. in River Forest, Illinois. That hockey store still stands today, and the company has now expanded to include a Morton Grove location and a Chicago hockey store in the West Loop neighborhood.

From the 1970s through the mid-1980’s, Gunzo’s was the exclusive equipment provider for the Chicago Blackhawks. Legends such as Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Tony Esposito, and other Blackhawks players got their gear at Gunzo’s.
