Player

Gloves

Your elbow pads and gloves should provide continuous protection from above the elbow to the tips of your fingers. The cuff of the glove should extend to the bottom of your elbow pads leaving no part of your lower arm exposed.Most gloves today are of the “short cuff” style.  These gloves provide better freedom of movement to your wrist.  With this style glove, you may want to add an additional padded wristband to provide full coverage to your forearm.  To protect your fingertips, your fingers should not go all the way to the end of the glove.

Player Skates

Usually, skates fit 1 to 1 1/2 sizes smaller than your shoe size. Put on the socks you plan to skate with (thin socks are best), put on the skate and push your toes all the way to the front of the skate. For youth and junior players, a properly fitted skate should allow you to slide one finger behind your heel to allow for growth.  Any bigger can cause blisters on feet and a breakdown of the sides of the boot. For adult players, sit down and kick your heel firmly into the back of the boot. Tighten the laces firmly through the first 2-3 eyelets so that the skate is snug near the toe. Lace the next 3-4 eyelets a little looser to give your arch room to flex. Tighten the laces firmly through the remaining eyelets to lock your heel firmly into the skate. The eyelets should be 1 1/2 to 2 inches apart, if not, consider a narrower or wider skate. A properly fitted skate should allow for the player to stand up straight, and have their toes “feather” the front toe cap of the skate.  When the player bends their knees it should pull the toes slightly back off the toe cap.Walk around on the skates for 10-15 minutes to check comfort and fit. Your foot should be flat in the boot and not pinched in the toe, arch, or heel.  Your heel should not lift or move in the skate.   

How do I break them in?

Put them on and wear them around the house (with skate guards of course!) for a few hours.  This will help break them in and cause you less discomfort when you first use them.

Shin Guards

Your shin pads protect your knees and shins from contact with both puck and stick.  Your knee should fit comfortably into the kneecap cup of the shin pad.  You should select a shin pad long enough to reach the top of your skate boot without interfering with the skate.  If the shin pad is too short, your ankle could be exposed.  If it's too long your skate could push the shin pad out of position causing your knee to be improperly positioned in the kneecap cup.

To select a size, bend your leg at a 90-degree angle and measure the length of your shin from the center of your kneecap to the top of your skate boot.

Player Pants

Your hockey pants protect your midsection from the bottom of your shoulder pads to the top of your shin pads. Above the waist, the pants should extend up to the lower rib cage and the bottom of your shoulder pads. At the knee, the pants should overlap the top of your shin pads by one or two inches to provide coverage even when you bend your knee.

Your pants should fit loosely enough to allow a full range of motion in your waist and hips, but not so loose that they shift out of position.  Most pants include a belt so that you can secure the pants firmly at your waist.  For most players, your waist size can be used to select hockey pants.

Shoulder Pads

Your shoulder pads protect your upper body including upper arm, shoulder, collarbone, back, chest, and ribs.  For proper protection, your shoulders should fit comfortably into both shoulder cups. Then, a variety of straps will allow you to adjust the fit for arms, chest and back.To select a size, measure the circumference of your chest by wrapping a tape measure around your chest just under your armpits.  The sizing (e.g. Small, Medium, Large) for different shoulder pad manufacturers varies, but this measure can be used to help you select the right size.  As an example, Bauer shoulder pad sizes are shown below:

Elbow Pads

Your elbow pads protect your arm from the biceps extension of your shoulder pads to the cuff of your gloves leaving no part of your arm exposed.  Your elbow should fit comfortably into the elbow pad cup and the elbow pad should fit securely without twisting or sliding on your arm.    With short cuff gloves popular today, you can also add padded wrist pads to protect your forearm between the elbow pad and glove.

Helmet

What helmet should I buy?

You want protection and comfort - and these come largely from a properly fitting helmet. Look for helmets certified by CSA (Canadian Standards Association) or HECC (Hockey Equipment Certification Council).

 

What size should I get?

 

Your helmet should fit snug at the forehead, top, back and sides of your head. The helmet should not shift or wobble on your head - this will reduce protection and comfort and also be distracting during play. The chinstrap should be adjusted so that it gently contacts your chin with your mouth closed.You will need to adjust the helmet so that it is snug without pinching. Depending on the shape and size of your head, some helmets will just feel better than others.  The helmet should fit flat on the head about 1/2 inch above the eyebrows without tilting forward or back. If the helmet is loose or not properly fastened, you may as well not wear a helmet - you will not be well protected.To select a size, measure the circumference of your head by wrapping a tape measure around your head about 1 inch above your eyebrows just over your ears to the back of your head. The sizing (e.g. Small, Medium, Large) for different helmet manufacturers varies, but this measure can be used to help you select the right size.  As an example, Bauer 4000 helmet sizes are shown below:

Player Sticks

If your stick is too short, you will miss a lot of pucks by swinging over them or, worse, you will have to skate bent over so that your stick will be on the ice. If your stick is too long, you will have difficulty controlling the puck because the butt-end of your stick will get caught up under your arms and across your body.

To cut your stick to the right length, stand up straight without your skates on. Put the tip of the blade on the ground between your feet and hold the stick in front of your face. For most players, you will want the stick to reach to the tip of your nose. With skates on, your stick should reach to your chin. Some defensemen like a longer stick for additional reach and some forwards like a shorter stick for better stick handing.

Player Accessories

What about face masks/guards? To protect your face, you need a cage or shield. Both provide good protection with the cage providing better ventilation and the shield better visibility. Your choice should be based on your comfort and preference.

Masks are sized based on length, from the top of the helmet where the mask is attached to the chin cup at the bottom. They should fit snug to your chin with your mouth closed. Measure your face from forehead to chin to determine the proper size cage for your face.

 

What about mouthguards? Wear your mouthguard! Mouthguards are not just for teeth - they provide substantial protection for the jaw and even aid in preventing concussions! Properly fitted, a good mouthguard will protect teeth, mouth, jaw and even brain by absorbing and dissipating shock from a blow to the mouth or jaw. Get a good mouthguard - it's a lot cheaper and less painful than dental work!

Goalie

Catch Gloves

Your chest & arm pads and catch/Blocker gloves should provide continuous protection for the length of your arm and hand.  The cuff of your catch/blocker gloves should extend up to or slightly over the bottom of the arm protection on your chest & arm pads.  To protect your fingertips, your fingers should not go all the way to the end of the gloves.  You should try the gloves on with your chest & arm pads to make sure they fit comfortably and to not interfere with your hand movement. Catcher and Blocker gloves are sold in "Regular" and "Full Right" styles.  "Regular" is for right-handed players who use their left hand for the catcher glove and their right hand for the Blocker and stick.  Oddly enough, "Full Right" is for left-handed players who use their right hand for the catcher glove and their left hand for the Blocker and stick.

Goal Masks

Goal MasksProper fit is crucial in assuring maximum protection. Place the mask on the head so that the top edge of the face opening is approximately 1/2" above the eyebrows. The mask should fit snug without movement on the head. Self-adhesive foam pads are included and can be added to provide a secure fit. The sweatband must be securely in place while fitting and during use. The chin cup should be adjusted to be snug so as not to allow movement on the head or allow the mask to be pushed in closer to the jaw. The chinstrap must always be used and should be adjusted so that the mask cannot be displaced during play. The rear skull plate and straps should be adjusted so as to apply a slight amount of tension to achieve a secure fit. These adjustments should be checked frequently to assure a proper fit.To determine the proper size required, measure the circumference of the head above the eyebrows. Based on the measurements, select the head protector size as indicated in the chart. Due to varying head shape, jaw width and body weight, you may find the best fit may be other than what is indicated in the chart. The product must be tried on to confirm the correct fit.

Chest and Arms

Goalie arm & chest pads protect your upper body and arms.  For proper protection, your shoulders should fit comfortably into both shoulder cups and the pads should extend down to your waist.  A variety of straps will allow you to adjust the fit for arms, chest, and back.You should also make sure that the arms could be adjusted so that your elbows fit comfortably into the elbow cups.  If the arms are too long, they will interfere with your catcher and Blocker gloves.  The arms should extend to    1 1/2 inches above your wrist bone.  Your catcher and Blocker gloves should extend up over the bottom of your arm pads.Arm & chest pads are sized based on the height of the goalie. The sizing (e.g. Small, Medium, Large) for different arm/chest pad manufacturers varies, but this measure can be used to help you select the right size.  As an example, Vaughn arm/chest pad sizes are shown below:

Goal Pants

 

Add approximately 8" (20cm) to your actual waist size to come up with a pant size. If you like a big fitting pant, add 10" (25cm).

Leg Pads

To properly estimate a goaltender’s size for a pair of goal pads, take the following 3 measurements: 1) Floor to mid-point of knee cap -_____ (A) 2) Mid-point of kneecap to desired height on thigh-_____ (B) 3) Skate size-_____x0.75=_______(C) – only add up to size 10 skate as goal skate cowlings do not get larger over size 10The estimated size of pads would then be (A) + (B) + (C) To get the best fit, it is a good idea to try the pads with your skates and pants on.  Leg pads for an adult goaltender should allow for your kneecap to be centered and secured in the knee cradle. The pad for a youth goaltender may allow for your kneecap to be slightly low in the knee cradle to allow for growth.  This is acceptable if the height of the pad does not interfere with your pants and the pad functions and protects as designed.

Goal Sticks

There are several factors that should play into selecting a goalie stick. The goalies height and more importantly, personal preference, should be considered in selecting the correct paddle length. Although there is no direct correlation between the goalies height and paddle length, goalies should usually start using a senior sized stick at about 55.

Another difficulty that we face is that different manufacturers use different methods to measure their sticks. For example, brands such as Montreal measure up the middle of the paddle whereas Sher-Wood measures up the outside edge.

Goal Accessories

Throat Guard or Neck Guard  Goalies are required to wear either a throat guard or a neck guard. A throat guard is usually made of clear plastic and hangs from the helmet to provide protection for the neck area.The throat guard should cover the area between the bottom of the face mask and the chest protector.A neck guard is padded and is worn around the goalies neck much like a players neck guard is worn.

Jocks  Goalies should use a protector (pelvic protector or cup/jock) which is specifically designed for goalies. Often, protectors include Velcro straps that fasten to the goalies hockey socks so a separate garter or sock tape is not necessary.
